As the herds of buffalo became so alarmingly depleted, Buffalo Bill was said to have kept the largest herd of the animals remaining. He used them for his show and bred them to help rebuild their numbers.
During the next several years, Buffalo Bill built a home near Cedar Mountain, Wyoming, and the town eventually took on the name of Cody. He spent time there when he could, and the local population was proud that he made his home there.
For almost thirty years the Wild West Show ran successfully; but Buffalo Bill was aging, and his health gradually weakened. During the last couple of years of the show, his funds were running low, and he and his wife went to stay at his sisterâs home in Denver. One of Codyâs friends was Denver Post co-owner Harry Tammen, who had made him a loan to help keep the show going. Unfortunately, the contract for the loan included the rights to the show and to the use of Buffalo Billâs name. As Billâs life wound down, Harry Tammen held a note for $20,000. Cody was distressed over this, and some believe it may have hastened his death.
When Buffalo Bill Cody died at his sisterâs home at 2932 Lafayette Street in Denver on January 10, 1917, he was seventy-one years old and virtually penniless. Telegrams poured in from friends everywhere, including the king of England, the kaiser of Germany, President Wilson, governors, generals, and senators. His sister, Louisa, upon announcing her brotherâs death, announced that he would be buried atop Lookout Mountain, west of Denver.
This news came as a shock to many of Codyâs friends. What about his birthplace in Iowa? And North Platte, Nebraska? It was his home for many years and the site of his first Wild West Show.Had it even been given consideration? And what about the town of Cody, Wyoming, which Buffalo Bill had founded? The citizens of Cody recalled that Buffalo Bill himself had stated that he wanted to be buried there. People were outraged. How had this happened?
Perhaps Harry Tammen had had something to do with it. Had he bribed Codyâs sister? There was no question that the burial site would greatly benefit the location where it was placed. Besides the sentimental value to those who had known Buffalo Bill, the tourist dollars for such a famous landmark would be a financial boon.
Some light was shed on these questions decades later when a reporter from Time magazine wrote an article commemorating Codyâs one-hundredth birthday. Stirring up all the hard feelings again, the article stated, âDenverâs mayor Robert W. Speer was out to claim him. Buffalo Bill, dead and enshrined, would obviously be a great civic asset. Behind Speer, in the shadows, was Harry Tammen, the moving spirit behind the plot to keep Buffalo Bill in Colorado, near Denver.â
Indeed, the Colorado Legislature lost no time in passing a resolution allowing Buffalo Billâs body to lie in state in the Capitol rotunda from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Sunday, January 14, 1917.
